Misael Hernandez is a CrossLink missionary who is pastoring Iglesia Biblica Vida Nueva – a bilingual church in Yakima. One of the unique things about living in the United States on a religious visa is that none of Misael’s family members are able to work and earn an income without social security numbers for about 5 years. However, their children, Vasti and Dan, have both been able to attend high school and Vasti was able to start her college education as a Running Start high school student at Yakima Valley College (YVC).

Shortly after coming to Yakima in 2019, Vasti started her first quarter at YVC as a high school senior in Spring 2019. Although taking college-level classes in high school and in a whole new country was a challenge, Vasti credits God’s help for getting her so far! She graduated from high school in June 2020 and only has two more quarters until she completes her AA Degree from YVC. Without high school covering the tuition, the cost for college has increased significantly to $1,800 per quarter or $3,600 total if she wants to finish the last two quarters needed for an AA degree.

We asked Vasti if she was concerned about not being able to attend YVC without funds and not being able to work for an income, and she said, “God has been faithful, as He always is, and I know that if His plan is for me to continue on this path, He will provide.”

Vasti’s plan was to finish the AA degree through YVC and transfer to Central Washington University in Ellensburg where she hoped to pursue a major in both Deaf Studies and Spanish with a minor in Linguistics. “I want to become an American Sign Language Interpreter, and hopefully someday be used to help the Church reach those who hear in a different way.”

We wanted to share Vasti’s story with the CrossLink community because she is an amazing young woman who loves Jesus and we wanted to support her dream of signing in English and Spanish to the deaf community.

If you know of financial aid opportunities that Vasti could apply for under a R-1 visa or if you would like to contribute (not a tax-deductible donation) to a scholarship fund for Vasti, please designate funds to:
